RNA interference workshop for South Korean colleagues
Agriculture is currently facing significant challenges due to progressive climate change. Growing conditions are being altered, and crops are contending with droughts, heatwaves, and flooding. Moreover, new plant diseases and pests are spreading. Conventional crop protection products are the subject of controversial discussions as their availability diminishes. Sustainable plant protection could be achieved through methods like RNA interference, which has been the focus of successful basic research by the Epigenetics working group for many years, presenting new application possibilities. RNA technologies have gained wider public attention, especially since the development of coronavirus vaccines. The replacement of conventional pesticides with RNA molecules also presents significant opportunities in agriculture.
Prof. Krczal presented on this topic during the congress of the International Association of Plant Biotechnology, following which AgroScience organized an RNA interference workshop for South Korean colleagues from 20th to 23rd March 2024.
 Virology Working Group
On 11th and 12th March 2024, the Virology Working Group of the German Phytomedical Society met in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, organized by Prof. Dr. Krczal. 70 participants from plant protection services, universities, and research institutes exchanged views in the context of virological lectures.
Invited speakers Prof. Klaus-Dieter Jany, Chairman of the Scientific Circle for Genomics and Genetic Engineering, and Prof. Holger Puchta, Director of the Joseph Gottlieb Kölreuter Institute for Plant Sciences at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), spoke on the topic of genome editing. Dr. Frederik Polzin, Dr. Thierry Wetzel, and Dr. Patrick Winterhagen from DLR Rheinpfalz also gave presentations on the topic of "Legally regulated viruses" as invited speakers.
